Having had a day or so to think about this, I gotta say, I’m pretty offended!
The long and the short of it involves a good friend of mine in the SCA who travelled out of Kingdom recently representing Caid. Arriving at his symposium, a peer that he did not know confronted him. Why? Because he is from a Kingdom that allowed two men to step up together as landed nobility, and this person was apparently very much opposed to that. Even though it is neither her Kingdom, nor her Barony, she is still very offended.
WTF?
After spending some time really thinking about it, I have reached one and only one conclusion: If she doesn’t like it, she can KISS MY GAY BEHIND!
Seriously! Think about this, people. This isn’t something that relates only to the SCA – this is a story about life. How is it – HOW IS IT – that anybody out there can rationalize casting a decision about somebody that they’ve never even met – based solely upon sexual orientation? It just mystifies me!
So… the fact that my hubby and I have a long history in this Barony… I guess that doesn’t matter.
So… the fact that my hubby and I understood this job for the work that it is, and volunteered to do it… I guess that doesn’t matter.
So… the fact that my hubby and I have over 50 years of experience in this game… I guess that doesn’t matter.
So… the fact that we have uncovered oodles of historical examples of same-gender rulers throughout Western European society… I guess that doesn’t matter.
So… the fact that this was the decision of our Barony and our Kingdom… I guess that doesn’t matter.
What DOES matter to this ignorant git? The fact that we’re two guys into other guys. And that is, in her little mind and little world, a deal-breaker.
I truly feel sorry for anybody who is so ignorant that they cast stones at others based upon a prejudice. Fortunately for us, most of the people that we know in the SCA and also in life couldn’t care less what our religion or color or creed or sexuality. They only care about the person within. That’s how it SHOULD be, after all.
I’m sorry that my friend had to go through such an awkward and uncomfortable moment on our behalf. Nobody should have to suffer such ignorance or unpleasantry – we deserve better – and our friends ABSOLUTELY deserve better!
In a way, I’m sorry that I do not know who that woman is, because you’d better believe I’d be personally following up on her conduct. But in other ways, it is better that I don’t know. The fact is, she isn’t the only one. Sadly, there are ignorant people out there everywhere – in the SCA and in the 9-5 day-to-day world. Hopefully, this will serve as a wake-up call. The SCA likes to make a point to escape from the nastiness that can be the real world. By returning to a “Ye Olde” time, we can place more emphasis on kindness, and civility, and honor. But in recent times, the SCA has been forced to face some very ugly realities in the mirror. Our very culture, whether we like to admit it or not, has some built-in prejudices. And obviously, some people handle them better than others.
A person who cannot enjoy others taking pleasure in life must be very lonely. I feel sorry for her.
