That's just wrong

Yesterday, I caught a handful (3 or 4) of boys snapping the heads off the agapanthus (http://www.bhg.com/bhg/plantfinder/plantDetails.jhtml;jsessionid=ZSRXT03L2ORRVQFIBQPSCZQ?plantId=/templatedata/bhg/plant/data/Agapanthus.xml&includePaging=true&plantNumber=11&searchType=advance&detailsUrl=/servlet/PlantFinderDetailPagingServlet.dyn&_requestid=60543) plants in front of our apartment. I scolded them, saying, "Don't do that! Those will turn into flowers if you leave them on the plants!" The boys looked positively stunned that anyone would chastise them, much less someone who wasn't one of their parents (who probably wouldn't, now that I think of it). I don't know if my efforts did anything other than teach them that I'm a crabby old lady, but I hope something connected on some level.

I would have really chewed out your culprits had I witnessed it. And then I would have tried to replant the poor little things.

My daughter is mortified whenever I say anything to anyone I don't know, and wants to sink into a hole in the ground whenever I chew out kids who are breaking the rules. But if I don't do it, I give silent consent to the bad behavior.

Go ahead and plant more in the front yard. You may need to plant, and replant, and plant again. But if you don't, you'll drive up to the house and see the blank spot every day, and it will make you hurt and angry every day. Yes, there is the risk that the wretches will violate your property again. But they might not.

Don't let them win.
