The normally surreal blue skies above Santa Ana gloomed over this morning in a frown promising the onset of that phenomenon known to locals as “weather”.  A cool moist breeze, unseasonable for this time of year, reminded me during my morning jaunt that the last remnants of Winter refused to completely give way until its last breathe draws.  Mother Earth has no idea what to do.  In Japan, the cherry blossoms arrived early, confusing a culture that bases economic interests in cherry blossom festivals that take place later in the year.  In Canada, seal-pelt hunters complain about a decline in seals.  Why the decline?  Because more and more baby seals, who need land until they learn how to swim, drown as a result of fewer ice sheets.  In this isolated case, can one take solace in the fact that the seals drown rather than face the horror of being clubbed to death?

What have we done to our planet?  Our ecosystem?  Our selves?  Have we upset Mother Nature enough for her to strike at us the only way that she can?  Have we angered her so much that we can no longer count on any degree of regularity in nature?  Sadly, humans are unique in one aspect of Darwinism.  Other species may have disappeared in the past.  Yet, we have the unique ability of taking other species with us – heck, pushing them out the door before us.  “Thou hast given him dominion over the works of Thy hands.”  Yep… and look what we have done.
