Save California... from "Save California"
Feb. 12th, 2007 11:00 amFuckers!
In the past, equal-rights activists have worked on a very peaceful protest. I can't even really call it a protest. It is more of an act of quiet civil disobedience. Very simply, on February 14th, gay and lesbian couples have gone down to the local county courthouses to do what straight couples have been able to do for ages - apply for marriage licenses. Of course, we have been turned down. Year after year after year we have been turned down. But year after year, there are more people asking for them - more people standing up against this blatant act of discrimination - more people demanding to be treated like American citizens. Gasp! What a CONCEPT! "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal". EXCEPT for those second-class citizens - the fags and the dykes, of course.
Apparently, the hate-mongering right-wing has learned about the February 14th act of love, and has been fueling up the fires. They have been sending out massive emails, all in the name of "saving California" or "saving marriage" to gather protesters against the civil disobedients. "Save marriage"? From what? Oh, that's right... from the evils of the homosexual ways. We, the queers of the world, will be taking over marriages! Oh wait...
First of all, let's point something out. Wake up people - we have ALREADY taken over marriage. Exactly WHO are the best wedding coordinators, tailors, florists, bakers, choreographers, photographers? Palease!
Secondly, don't EEEEEEEVEN get me started on the "sanctity" of marriage, lest I pull out the dusty example set by dear Britney Spears. What really determines the "sanctity" of marriage? Is it the approval of Dubya? The approval of the Pope? The approval of some council of angry white men somewhere overseas? Silly me... I thought that the sanctity of any religious rite came down simply to one thing - love. All you right-wing Christians out there - remember love? Do you? Remember when Jesus said "love thy neighbor"? It was simple enough for him. It SHOULD be simple enough for the rest of us. Very few concepts transcend the boundaries of separate faiths. Love is the one thing that breaks down the barriers. My husband and I have love. And I defy anybody - ANYBODY - to assert that our marriage is anything but real. We have love. Nothing - NOTHING - can change that.
Third, separation of church and state - may it rest in peace. Le sigh. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!! Dubya called for a defense of the "sanctity of marriage". Since WHEN has it been the job of the government to defend the sanctity of anything? Exactly WHEN did the President decide to take on the job of a church leader? More importantly, since when did America lose its balls and quietly sit back and allow that asshole to keep doing it? We all look like idiots.
Now don't get me wrong - UNLIKE the hate-mongering right-wing, I do believe in free-speech. I do believe in equality. I do believe in one's right to express oneself. And if the right-wing intolerants wanna show up to cause a scene, let them. They have that right. They can kiss my queer ass, but I will fight for them to have that right. And I can only hope that history will portray them with their equals. I hope they enjoy being in the chapter following the one dedicated to those who opposed women's right to vote. I hope they will enjoy their place on the pages next to those who arrested Rosa Parks.
Sadly, this country has a long list of groups that were considered second-class. The Irish, the Italians, women, blacks, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc., etc. And gee... after a struggle, every group managed to achieve equality - at least in the courtrooms. That is where we are headed. And we will accept nothing less than equality. Maybe it won't happen today. Maybe not tomorrow. But it WILL happen.
Save California... Save California from idiots! Save this Country from hypocrisy. Save this world from hatred.
