Countdown to Pentathlon!

For some reason, despite all of the work stress and the craziness in my life, right now I am strangely focused on one thing – pentathlon. For those non-SCA types out there, Pentathlon is an arts competition held once every two years out here in this neck of the woods. Entries are recreations of items found within pre 1650 historical culture. As the name of the competition would imply, I have put together five entries. When all is said and done, I’ll be glad to discuss/photograph each of them. 

 

Over the years, I have judged a huge amount of A&S competitions, and have entered a lot of them as well. Lately, I have not been doing so much along the entry lines – mainly because I have wanted to focus more on judging and teaching. Yet this go around, I felt… I dunno… inspired? And now that we are in the final countdown, I must admit something – I’m feeling really good about my entries! Now, that isn’t to say that I believe I’m set to win. Frankly, the competition part is, to me at least, the single least important part of this whole thing. For me, I compete against one and only one person – myself. The challenge each time is simply this – is this really, honestly, and truly the best that I can do? Often, the answer is no. Despite the best of intentions, there is often something that falls off at the end – some shortcut, or some little flaw, or some little thing that occurs where I know, even if nobody else does, that something is not quite right. This time is different. Is each entry necessarily perfect? Perhaps not. But I feel pretty confident that on each entry, I have done the absolute best that I can do, and I cannot identify anything else or anything further that I should have done. So now it is up to the judges to educate me. Yeah!!!!!!!
