Oh, where to even begin? I think the key point that I need to get through my thick skull is this – even if they are fun activities, doing too many one right on top of another, on top of another is just exhausting and WILL lead to an early death. Will I ever learn this lesson? Time will tell.
Having returned from Big Bear for all of two seconds, we had just enough time to unpack from that, and begin packing/prepping for Highland. And for me, I had the added fun of figuring out what in the world we would be eating over the course of the weekend. Hmmmm….
In all honesty, I gotta say that I enjoyed myself at Highland more than I had expected. I felt very bogged down by a rush of logistics and prep-work, which clouded over in my mind the idea of any fun that we might actually end up having. Being one of those people who can (and does) suffer anxiety attacks, the oncoming rush of activity and packing felt like a tsunami sweeping down from the end of the block. But, with the help of a calm pack-mule of a hubby, lists, and a happy-pill, I was able to return to the mindset of “just do one thing at a time” versus, “OMIGOD, I have so much to DOOOOOO!!!!!!”
Once we managed to get on the road for the event, I think both Paul and I were surprised at just how smooth the trip was. Being the proud new parents of a (kinda) new trailer, we both had our concerns over the ride. But I am pleased to report that we really barely noticed a thing, other than the distinct lack of concern about not having enough space to transport everything that we needed (YEAH!!!!!!)
So, without further ado, here is my top-ten list of great things at Highland.
10. Spending time with old friends and new in a very casual event setting.
9. The evil delight I gained in seeing my hubby have to wear tunics. Two words – wet cat.
8. Icy-cold gin-n-tonics on a warm afternoon. Gin makes it allllllll betttttter.
7. Lorelei Oktoberfest. Nuff said.
6. Sitting around a fire (of some sort) laughing until I can’t breathe while listening to other people’s stories about SCA folks, events, and classic ut-ohs.
5. Seeing our new banners fluttering on top of our (award-winning) pavilion.
4. Pushing Faizeh’s buttons. Seriously, it should be its own pentathlon category!
3. Discovering to my delight that Don Lot is one helluva great ringer at bocce.
2. Punch-pirate.
1. Thor (the big-assed mastiff) sloooooowly working his way out of a bell-wedge pavilion from underneath the wall. It took about 20 minutes, but he finally did it. And when he got free, he needed a nap.
