My feet are killing me, and I’m absolutely beat, but all in all I am pretty darned pleased with the event from this past weekend!

Barons’ Feast, traditionally, is a very laid-back event in the park. It is one of the rare occasions where the Coronets of the Barony are somewhat off their formal duties, but instead work on hosting an event for the populace, complete with games and an all-day eating fest. Not being a morning person, I have never made it to a Barons’ Feast at an early hour in the past, so this time was not only a first in terms of me being one of the hosts, but for being there the entire day.

I’ll admit it – I’m a paranoid-and-anxious event steward! I cannot stand running events in any capacity. And even when it is my job to be the head-cook, I frequently find myself plagued with anxiety, and I spend a good week in advance what-if’ing myself into a near-coma. Of course, even the most experienced head cook will often run into something that was “beyond control” and will be forced to punt. But still, I want things to be perfect. Heck, who doesn’t?

Arriving shortly after 7:00, I was surprised by the serenity of the site. Normally bustling with people, it was very unusual to arrive at a time when the only sounds were those of the birds greeting the day. And as we began to unload food and supplies, the anxieties built up for me as I looked at the clock and realized that it had now begun to tick.

Despite this being our first year doing this event, I’m pretty darned pleased with it, all in all. It wasn’t perfect, but I don’t know if perfection is ever really feasible (or even particularly important). But from my vantage point, it looked like people had fun, lots of laughing echoed through the trees, the games went well, and I had next-to-no-leftovers.

Now if only my feet would stop hurting…
