On Saturday morning, the Giley-alarm went off waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay early, as we had to get up and come to life to head off to the Happiest Place on Earth prior to its opening.

I was so incredibly groggy. As it is, I’m not a morning person (big collective GASP here). Now add on that it is Saturday morning and we’re getting up even earlier than I normally do on a weekday, and I was in a severe haze.

Arriving at Dland (after getting rerouted twice and not having the mental-capacity to figure out where to go/what to do), we met up with the rest of Team Caid, ready to walk the walk. Dressed all matchy-match with our team T-shirts and an array of silly-hats, the 50 or so of us strolled around Disney, smackin-big white-gloved mickey hands as we toured both the Magic Kingdom and California Adventure. Even though I am operating in a comatose haze, the little snippets of what I remember is all quite pleasant – especially being able to see the parks in all their beauty without all the crush of a kabillion tourists.

Joining the gang after the walk for brunch at the Rainforest Café, we had a great time gorging on bacon, chatting with people, eating more bacon, sipping on coffee, fighting over bacon, etc. I was really rather stunned when, following brunch, we headed home and it was not even 9:30 yet. “Wow!” I said in my naivety. “It’s amazing how much longer the day is when you get up early!” (We’ll file that under #nightpersonmakesadiscovery)

As if I did not already love the SCA and the Kingdom of Caid a metric assload as it is, I am even more proud having seen how many of us participated in this event to raise funds. Part of me has wanted to really do a push for this over the past few years, but I have been very sensitive. Call me a paranoid overthinker (which is an accurate description), but I have been worried a bit about using my position in the club and making people feel pressured to follow my causes or do things the way I want them done. Thus, when Team Caid formed completely on its own, I simply smiled ear to ear knowing that so many wonderful quirky-geeks-like-me chose to take part in something so very important.

Please good reader – please, please, please do NOT allow yourself to become complacent. This disease is still very real. It may not be on the front page the way that it once was, but it is very real. The good news is that medications are keeping people healthy and alive longer. But when you think about it, that also means that there are more and more people walking around with the disease – making the risk of transmitting it higher with each passing day.

Be careful.
Get tested.
Educate.
Remove the judgment and stigma.
And let’s all keep working – as one society – for a cure!

Thank you Caid. Thank you Disney. And thank you to all the rest of the walkers as well. Until there is a cure, there is us!
