Reflections on a New Year

As 2005 culminates, I find it difficult to reminisce without reflecting upon the devestation we have seen.
Throughout this year, the newspaper headlines have been filled with tale after tale of human suffering. How can we think of 2005 without reflecting upon...
- grim reports of a war that none of us really seems to understand
- New Orleans, drowning literally in its own filth
- the Thailand tsunami
- mudslides in Laguna
- HIV on the rise again with young gay men
- a superstrain of HIV? Fact or fiction?
- the death of the last pope, and the election of his replacement, the sith
- the loss of friends and family members
To borrow an expression from Elizabeth, Queen of England, - 2005 is not a year upon which I shall look back with fondness.
