Countdown to Snowy Weekend
Jan. 11th, 2007 12:53 pmAfter work last night, I hit the House of Pain for my first actually GOOD workout of the 2007 year. No, I’m not gonna whine that “I’m So Fat!” (even though I do feel it). I DO have a couple o’ holiday pounds that I need to work on shedding, so hopefully by the end of January I will accomplish that goal, and my pants won’t feel QUITE so tight around the waistline.
As I arrived home, I felt actually energized, and set about with my tasks. Of course, I could not begin cooking before making space. And to do that, I had to clean. And to do that, I had to put away things. Yes… I’m afraid my inner-Joan-Crawford managed to make her appearance. I didn’t QUITE beat my dear husbear with a wire hanger, but I must confess to making a few piles of things to be put away… or else!
My mission last night involved baking some chocolate sin cakes for Snowy Weekend this weekend. I am looking forward to the event. A smaller invitation-only event, it will involve an SCA group up in the mountains. After some discussion, we opted to do it mostly modern – food, clothes, etc., but to put our period “oompfh” into one day. Saturday will be our period day. My red-headed co-hort in crime will be cooking for the weekend, and I gotta admit, that is my biggest thrill of all. We have really NOT gotten to do much bonding in recent times, and I look forward not only to that, but to surrounding ourselves with our own cooking fun. Call me crazy, but I LIKE cooking.
I have enjoyed doing the Winter Weekend event in the past. However, recent circumstances led me to the conclusion that it would be best for me to skip it. I am saddened about that, but I feel it was best. And ultimately, I’ll still be able to have fun on the same weekend in the same mountains with the same snow, and have really good food. T’is the best of all worlds.
I think that having “modern” days and a “period” day will make for an interesting concept. That is one thing that drove me bonkers about Winter Weekend. The event is supposed to be a period event, not unlike other SCA events. Yet, it seems to have less emphasis than most events I have attended. I am as modern as the next person. But when going to a historical reenactment event, I expect people to make an effort to… oh gee… do history. What does that mean? That means, no modern games, no laptops, no ipods, and for cryin’ out loud, make the food based on historical recipes, damnit!
I like boundaries (no really). It isn’t that I don’t like these kinds of things. I just like for everyone to be playing by the same set of rules at the same time. I enjoy both checkers and chess. But I can’t play checkers against someone else who is playing chess. In my brain, it just doesn’t work.
Well, in any case, I am truly looking forward to this weekend. I still have more baking to do, (and will probably be doing it up until the last minute), but it is gonna be delish!
