The Adventures Continue
Nov. 14th, 2012 12:11 pmThis past weekend, the Giuseppe-tour-of-the-SCA continued as Colette and I headed up Friday afternoon to Sacramento to attend the West Kingdom Collegium. As long and dull a drive as it is, I have to admit that I really enjoyed having the bonding time with Colette. We’ve never had the opportunity to hang, just the two of us, so we (mostly I) were gabby-pals the entire time up there. Joining my dear, yet sadly-distant apprentice Adelheit and hubby Erik, we stayed up there, and went through a few bottles of wine until the wee hours of the night. And as time went by, our plan for Saturday changed. What had started as us getting to Collegium bright and early, changed to later in the morning, to early afternoon, to blowing off the entire thing and only attending the evening class, which is what we wanted to attend – a period feast in the style of 1530’s Italy.
Waking up late the next morning, I slowly came to life in a grumpy bear way, and we ended up (coincidentally) at the Black Bear Diner for breakfast. One thing that I have learned to adore about Sacramento – it didn’t seem to matter where we went – linguica was on every menu! Ahhh… the food of my people! Later in the day, we arrived at the event site. And immediately, I ran into dear friends that I know from up in that neck of the woods.
What can I say about that feast, other than WOW?!!!!! Truly, I just love these experiences. The menu was authentic to the time period, and the styling of the feast was like nothing I have experienced. In so many ways, it felt more like being at a fine restaurant than merely at an SCA feast. The servers made sure we had drinks at all times, and the food just kept coming. There was so much variety, and it was all period and utterly delicious. When all was said and done, I just wanted somebody to cut me out of my vestimento! It truly was a pleasure not only to hang out with friends that I don’t normally get to see, but to experience such a classy tribute to history and to culinary history – something that I just cannot get enough of, and gain so much inspiration from.
Following the feast and more bonding time with Adelheit and Erich, Colette and I faced the long trek back home. But upon realizing that neither of us had to work on Monday, it didn’t take any convincing at all to decide to head to San Francisco for a continuation of the foodie tour. Off to the Ferry Building we went where we met up with another dear friend, Chris (or Lasairfhiona). Geeking out, shopping, and sampling on the delicacies of the Ferry Building, our trip would next take us to the home of Duchess Juana Isabella and her maaaavelous Cheese oubliette. CHEESE!!!!! Wonderful cheese!!!!!!!! What can I say? She is a food enabler! I loved spending time visiting such wonderful people and bonding with friends that I don’t get to see enough. But alas, all good things must come to an end. Another seven hour roadtrip south saw us home somewhere around 11:30ish that evening. Exhausted, but happy, it was one helluvatrip.
Next weekend… Ridgecrest!
