Another chapter nears its end

storytimewithjoeIn typical fashion, Tuesday morning brings about a much needed pause where I can assess the whos, the whats, and the wheres of the week. Since the weekend typically bleeds directly into Monday, I usually don’t get the opportunity to start the workweek calmly. If anything, my Monday mornings are more often than not spent metaphorically chasing after a trolley, jumping on after it has already begun moving. And as I hang on for stability, barely dodging the lampposts and mailboxes of the day, I look forward to that trolley stop where I can take a breath, and figure out where I am.
Opening up the daytimer, the week is, as usual, full to the brim. Last night, I had a Cooking Guild meeting. Tonight we have a Home Tour meeting. Tomorrow, I have yoga. Thursday I hold Kingdom Scriptorium, and then on Friday right after work, we catch the train to

This Thursday will be my last evening of hosting the Kingdom Scriptorium. On the one hand, WOOHOO! Having adopted this particular activity around 3 or 4 years ago, I dove into an area where to be utterly, perfectly and directly honest, I had no clue what to do. “I don’t know nuthin’ ‘bout doin’ no scrolls!” But at the time, somebody had to take it, or it would die out completely. And given that the Claycomb House has one thing that most houses don’t have – SPACE – I was qualified to host.
Looking back at those early evenings, it really was just that. People would come over and use the space, and I would provide the sodas and the pep-pep, rah-rah. Eventually, I began working on my own scrolls and trying to help organize who was doing what and where things were in the process. Having completed my very first scroll, I felt something I didn’t expect to feel – a sense of fulfillment. I helped! I helped relieve an unfinished burden. It may not have been much. But to me, the sense of fulfillment was huge. Then came another scroll… and another… and another. I don’t know why, or how to describe it, but there is just something really cool about taking award scrolls through the process. Whether I worked on them entirely by myself, or tag-teamed with people more talented than I, I love being able to create an original work of art that also serves to symbolize the recognition of the award recipient. It is just… pretty darned cool.
Part of me is sad about handing off the scriptorium. I have no doubt that the new Scribe Armarius who will be taking it on will carry on the tradition with pep and respect. Yet, as much as I really look forward to the return of my 1st and 4th Thursdays, I am sad to see this chapter close. I need to do this for my own sanity and burn-out prevention. But still…
