Bleary-eyed, and groggy, I slumped my way into work this morning.  Walking through the cool and moist Santa Ana business district, memories of the weekend flashed before me like the speeding cars franticly rushing to jobs elsewhere.

Waking up at some latish hour on Saturday morning, I took advantage of the only relaxation time that I would see during the day.  Having finished up the puddings at around midnight the night before, I had Victorian cooking fast and furious on the brain.  Round about noon, Red showed up at the door and the cooking (and drinking) began.  Joined later by CarolAnn and her deadly giggly-juice, we were feeling no pain in no time.

Gee… can ya tell?

Despite the frantic artiste-freakouts that I had earlier in the week, Saturday really went very easily.  I was not worried about the cooking.  I was more concerned about the vision.  I had planned on the formality and fineness of a Victorian sit down dinner.  Unfortunately, this particular mob wanted none of that.  They wanted a catered party.

Le Sigh.

Oh well.  I remind myself – they paid over $3 grand for this.  They don’t HAVE to share my artsy vision.  Heck, I’ll serve ‘em boil in bag lean cuisine if that’s what they want!  (Le Gasp!  Le Shudder!)

As always, the brilliant “Widow Harper” played beautifully, lending a wonderful ambience to the entire evening.  I’m thinking that by next year, perhaps “poor Widow Harper” should remarry and become Mrs. McPlucket.  Hmmmm…

After our last French maid, Babette, ran off with one of the footmen, we had to find a new maid.  “Claudette” seems well-suited to the job.  But I believe she has been sampling some of the bottles here and there.  I will have to start marking them just to be sure…

“Jeeves”  stood upright as the utmost of professional (if not a bit stoic) butlers.  Excellent job, Jeeves… wot-wot…

And now for the foods.  Once again, through the chaos of it all, we did not get photos of absolutely everything.  But here are some of the finer points…

The flowers…

The “salat” course…

The main course…

The puddings…

Thanks! I LOVE that sweater! You too can have one of your own! Just travel back in time about 10 years, go to any mall in America and look for a store called "Structure". Enter the store, make purchase, return to the present. See, simple! ;)

That's no "he", that's "me" ;)

And thank you again. For a Structure garment, I was quite happy and surprised by it.

To get one that's perfect, I'll have my wife knit me one. I can sew, but can't knit worth a damn.

I stand corrected...You wear it well.

I knit AND sew...that's why I'll never have a wife. (one of the reasons....) LOL

It looks amazing. What was in the salad?

It was a "Bavarian Salad", which is from a 1903 recipe. The center is a combination of finely diced beats and onions on a bed of lettuce that is marinated in french dressing. An oil-based mayonaisse is then added to the top.

Sadly, when the lasagne comes out of the oven at 7:30, there is little to no waiting!

Little story. I used to work at a gourmet cooking school/store in St. Paul Minnesota (Lynn Rosetto-Kaspar, who is the host of NPR's "The Splendid Table" was one of our teachers.) Anyhoo, after Christmas one year we had a huge number of "Plum Duff" cakes that didn't sell, and were available, eventually for a dollar or two. I bought one, made hard sauce, tried it, and rushed back and bought all the remaining cakes. It was the lovliest breakfast dish, with hot strong coffee, I had ever had. YUMMMMMMM

And probably one of the most UNhealthy foods out there. Take all the bad stuff for you, putt it together, and cook it in a difficult way, and you have these types of foods. Lordie.

But where are the spam in aspic? Nothing says Victorian like meat jello!

Looks fabulous, darling! Kudos to you all!
