I cannot even begin to describe what a HUGE stress-relief it is to have made progress!!!  Shortly after getting home from work last night, I served up a batch of leftovers, and then sat down to work on a scroll.  Looking over the absolutely luscious calligraphy done by Adelheit, I choked down that typical “blank canvas” anxiety, mixed up some gauche, and got to work.  I have no idea why, but for some odd reason, the painting went quickly – REALLY quickly.  By the time I stopped at around 10:30, I was probably about 85-90% done.  WooHOO!  Since this is due at GWW, and I have no time between now and then to work on it, I was having these nightmare visions of having to work on it AT the event, which would be less-than-ideal.

Plugged into the ipod, I had a sequence of Tori Amos tunes going through my head while painting.  Why Tori?  I have no idea.  You’d think that I would pipe into something medieval to get into the right frame of mind, right?  Not so much.  It would probably be counterproductive for me to try painting to a scroll when a salterello comes onto the player.  My feet would no doubt begin to move to the dance beat, and it would show in the painting.  But why Tori?  I just tend to zen out, for whatever reason.  Maybe “Sleeps with Butterflies” helps me to channel Melesse so that I can quickly crank out a work of art?  Maybe other songs make me think of Missy Mo, leading to the same results?  Who knows what makes our brains work the way they do?

In typing about this, I remember years ago having a conversation with a group of friends about background music.  In this instance, we were talking about sewing.  One friend piped in saying that she could not have any kind of music or background distraction, as it interfered with her ability to concentrate.  Another friend talked about turning on the radio and just listening to Top 40 music.  Another friend suggested popping in classic movies for pleasant background entertainment and inspiration.  Then, butting her way into the conversation, a particularly obnoxious person offered the fact that she always watches Gone with the Wind whenever she sews.  Just as everyone began to roll their eyes and politely stay quiet, Satan possessed me temporarily as I retorted sharply, “No WONDER all your dresses look like old curtains, darlin’.”

When you get creative and/or artsy, what do you like to have as your background white noise?

Alpaca is wonderful. I have made a few hats with that.
I have four skeins of the Misty Alpaca Laceweight in black and a brilliant lace patterned wrap I want to work up.

Qiviut would be heavenly.

I also have some lovely Wool/Silk yarn that is waiting to be made up into 16th C Stockings.

Since January I have managed to gather up a rather respectable array of stash.

I bought some Handmaiden Seasilk on a business trio in may that I have No Clue what to do with.

Between that and the fabric and the embroidery stash..........my creative life is rather good.

I am what is considered a yarn-whore. I go into yarn stores and buy stuff, even if I don't need it and even if I don't know what I'm going to do with it.

I have the makings of about 8 sweaters in my stash. I can only make one at a time.

*sigh*

8 Sweaters.

I am currently working on my first sweater. I cast on the sleeves the other night.

This weekend I am taking an Entrelac class at a shop my friend owns in the Southbay.

I've made the Yankee Knitters patters, where you make the back, front, join 'em together, make the collar and then pick up the stitches from the body of the sweater and make the sleeves. Working on the front of a sweater now.

You can find the patterns here:
http://yankeeknitterdesigns.com/

I like them because they have patterns for sweaters for men. I've made the fisherlad gurnsey for my nephew, and I'm making it for myself now (pattern #9). I've also made the Channel Island Gurnsey (just need to finish the sleeves, pattern #12), and have done the easy bulky sweater (pattern #30). This last one I made for myself, made one for a good friend, and am making it in different colour for myself. Has a simple cable up the front. I find these sweaters fun and not too frustrating, and they can be made for kids or adults (she gives all the sizing info for both).

I haven't yet. I haven't had internet access at home until last week, and right now I'm house-sitting. When I get home, I'll post some photos to [livejournal.com profile] boysknittoo.

Cool - I will keep an eye out for the post!

I love seeing photos of what people are working on.
There is something so rewarding about being able to get excited by what people are creating. *g*

I mostly make hats and scarves, which are not too exciting. But I love sweaters, and even though I haven't done any knitting while I've been house sitting (2 weeks down, 1 to go!), I'll get this sweater done before it gets too cold.

I haven't done socks yet. Everyone tells me they're easy, but it's that heel thing. My friends [livejournal.com profile] hugh_mannity and [livejournal.com profile] knitchick_k1p1 are going to teach me socks.

PS Alpaca Day is coming!

Yes that is a great site!
The newest edition is really fantastic and I have earmarked at least one sweater as a project.
