OK, I admit that is an odd lead-in, but hear me out.

Yesterday, I found myself in the most horrible depression. It was so bad, I left work early. I couldn't function. I couldn't do any of my projects. Hell, I couldn't even cook dinner. It seemed like too much.

Now, having said that, what is odd about this scenario? It is NOT the new moon, so we cannot compensate in the typical way. Nor am I a manic-depressive. When I took a couple of valerian tablets, that didn't even help. What the f#$($? I rode out the evening, and went to bed.

This morning, a new idea occured to me. On Monday, after a really, really good workout, I got to the locker room, undressed, and was stepping into the hottub when IT happened. Shear - white lightening - agonizing - stabbing pain in the lowest of my low-back. My back just locked, and I couldn't even react. Being half-way on a step when it happened, I collapsed into the tub - fortunately into a seat with a direct hot-jet of water to the very spot. I sat there for a bit, unable to move. I don't know WHY I had a back-ache, but I did. I recall once when this happened before a side-effect of the back-spasm (or disk shift, or whatever the hell it was), was an emotional roller-coaster as a result of chemical release.

Anybody out there know anatomy well enough to give me some insights into what this was, what to do, and how to avoid it again?

my back does that from time to time.. mind you, I have something called ankylosing spondulitis (form of RA).. so I don't imagine that will be of much help to you...

Certainly that kind of spasm can cause emotional rebound -- your body doesn't like pain, and therefore reminds you not to do the things which -cause- pain.

I have a question, though, before I go further (actually, two): What body parts were you working Monday, and had you started to step -down- into the jacuzzi when the pain hit?

Sounds like an unstable disc. You may be working too fast on these headstands. Given your unique anatomy , you really need to have strong abs and flexible hip flexors. Can you do a straddle or split? If your pain was in the sacrum area, then the muscles that are on the front of the body need to be FLEXIBLE and strong.
As we age( yes my dear it happens) our Standard American Diet SAD does not have enough saturated fat in it to protect out discs, so they become less spongy and eventually start looking like dried up hockey pucks. No amount of water will keep your discs as hydrated as Omega fatty acids.
Increase your omega 3 intake- it reduces inflammation also an excellent nerve and mood stabilizer. If it says take 1 a day , take 4-5 . The worse thing that can happen is the runs. Also take it with some kind of raw citrus so the enzymes will help break it down and with food.
Look up Dr. Perricome and get some food pointers. You also may need to look for a suitable chiropractor if this keeps up.
Remember headstands really come along after years of practice, when the whole body is flexible and strong.

Omega-3, eh? I think I'll have to do that in supplemental form, as I just HATE fish.

Sounds like really good advice. I'll have to give it a shot!

As for the straddles and splits, I'm *pretty good*, but not grand. I can't *quite* get to a split, as I am just not quite that flexible yet.

Question - how well does the omega fatty acid work compared to a diet rich in olive oil (which is what I pretty much have nowadays)?

Omega fatty acids come in 3-6-9. Pre-modern diet is rich in 3's as they are derived from animals that consume green stuff like GRASS not corn and wheat primarily. With Big Conglomerate Agriculture stuffing as many cattle on to an acre of land, cows are then finished on grain to get that marbled meat. (you get your potatoes in your meat) Omega -3 's are not made from corn fed beef.In the case of fish -algae,but not farm-raised as they are all fed pellets made mostly of soy(shudder).
You can get get Omega-3 in grass-fed beef and grass-fed dairy. Look up a company called Organic Pastures. They are in Southern Cal. You will get sticker shock but it is well worth it and for your health and for your hubby too!. Olive oil, coconut, palm and most seed oils are omega-6's. You should have a 1:1:25 ratio of 3-6-9's but it is more like the opposite.
